Gauteng celebrate Women’s Day

The Gauteng Provincial Government in partnership with the City of Tshwane will host this year’s celebration of the 58th anniversary of the Women’s Day at the Union Buildings. The event will be preceded by a march led by the leadership of the province and the City of Tshwane on 9 August 2014.

Premier David Makhura, Councilor Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and the leadership of various women organisations, will lead thousands of people –mostly women- on the 4.2 km route starting at the Pretoria Train Station, through the city, via the Lillian Ngoyi Square (where the women’s memorial is under construction) and into the Union Building.

The concept of a march was since adopted over the last 2 anniversaries to be a permanent feature of the celebrations to honour, remember and relive the spirit of the women who took it upon themselves to help liberate this country by protesting against the apartheid pass laws.

This year’s festivities are held under the theme: “20 years of Democracy: Moving Women’s Agenda Forward through Socio Economic Transformation”.

“Much progress has been achieved over the past 20 years on getting women occupy top positions including the first woman Speaker of parliament – Dr Frene Ginwala; the first woman Deputy President - Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka; the first woman African Union Chairperson - Dr Nkosana Dlamini- Zuma; the first woman Public Protector - Thuli Madonsela and the first woman Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus among others,” said Gauteng for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Molebatsi Bopape.

MEC Bopape added: “With so much achievement the challenge is taking this to another level within all the sectors of our society including the economic transformation of our country as we all move South Africa forward.”

As part of the festivities at the Union Buildings, the Gauteng Premier David Makhura will address the people of Gauteng before the musical festival by an all-female line-up featuring the likes of Thandiswa Mazwai and the Women in song; Winnie Mashaba, Dj Zinhle and others.

There will also be various entities including South African Revenue Service (SARS); Home Affairs; South African Social Security Agency (SASSA); Health and Economic development agencies giving services and advice to the public on funding and related services.
