Wetland cleanup in Emfuleni to heighten awareness

The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in partnership with Emfuleni Local Municipality participating in the wetland clean-up. The community and other stakeholders will also participate in ensuring that this natural resource in their neighbourhood is cleared of any debris.

World Wetland Day (WWD) is celebrated internationally in February 2015. The celebrations are vital for creating awareness about the importance of wetland conservation. South Africa is a signatory of The Ramsar Convention, which aims to foster wetland and biodiversity conservation.

Some wetlands benefits:

Wetlands perform a valuable regulatory function of trapping residues, holding water and minimising the severity of floods.

Wetlands purify water and provide habitat for different plants and animals.

Communities harvest fiber to make crafts to earn a living and reap health benefits by harvesting medicinal plants from wetlands.

“We are excited that learners will be present to engage and participate in the day’s activities,” says Sustainable Resources Management (SRM) director Melinda Swift.  She stressed the importance of youth participation in all efforts aimed at enhancing environmental and conservation awareness.  Youth participation is in line with this year’s theme ‘Wetlands for our future.’
