Approximately 2 000 trees will be planted in various areas of Ekurhuleni Municipality to advance government’s commitment in environmental management and conservation.
The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) in partnership with Ekurhuleni Municipality and SANBI will continue with Arbour celebrations by planting trees in areas such as Kwa Thema, Tsakane and Duduza. Some identified households will receive fruit trees to promote food security and alleviate poverty. Ekurhuleni officials have been hard at work digging and lining indigenous trees in public spaces and newly developed areas of the municipality.
GDARD MEC Lebogang Maile says “communities need to appreciate indigenous trees as they do not pose a threat to our environment. Unlike alien plants such as Blue gum, indigenous trees do not consume a lot of water. We are a water scarce country and need to replace aliens with indigenous trees.” Maile urges each citizen to preserve water and play their part by using grey water for their plants.
