O.R. Tambo Boxing Tournament in Welkom
As part of various events that the Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation continues to implement in honor of Mr. Oliver Reginald Tambo’s centenary celebrations, the Department in collaboration with The Iron Lady Promotions will stage the O.R. Tambo Boxing Tournament. This boxing tournament is one of many steps that the Department is taking to ensure that Boxing is revived across the Free State Province and it will also play a critical role to ensure that Free State boxers get the exposure they deserve.
The tournament will take place as follows:
Date: 26 October 2017
Time: 18:30
Venue: Ferdie Meyer Hall, Welkom Entrance: Free!
The Main Bout will be a World Boxing Federation (WBF) title with Bukiwe Nonina from Limpopo against Matshidiso Mokebesi from Free State while the Main Supporting Bout will be a Provincial Bantum Weight title with Gift Pilane from Welkom against Sihle Jwelane from Mangaung.
“The O.R. Tambo Boxing Tournament seeks to give local boxers the opportunity to compete at a professional level and it will also strategically position boxing as a sport that can be enjoyed by the community. The Department fosters social cohesion through sport in order to transform the social fabric of our province. Furthermore, this tournament plays a critical role in creating opportunities for local businesses and service providers to benefit” said MEC Mathabo Leeto.
