Free State Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation hosts 2015 reading festival, 1 to 4 Sept

In celebrating Literacy Week 2015, the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will embark on a Reading Festival to take place from 1 to 4 September 2015 at the Black Mountain Resort, Thaba Nchu.

Literacy Week is celebrated throughout the country and annually from 1-7 September. The library fraternity in South Africa will engage in different activities during this time in celebration of books and reading.

Planned events include school children participating in competitions from local library to district and provincial level.

The competitions entail:

  • Establishment of Reading clubs in public libraries with children from ages 9 to 14.
  • Reading Quiz for learners in grades 3, 4, 5 and 9.
  • Spelling Bee for learners in grades 3, 4 and 5
  • Reading aloud for learners in grades 3, 4 and 5
  • Public Speaking to be conducted by Grade 9 learners, and councilors from 4 districts and Mangaung Metro Municipality.
  • Spelling Bee for Departmental officials.

The district winners will participate at Provincial and final competitions on the following dates:

1 September (Grade 3 learners)
2 September (Grade 9 learners; councillors and departmental officials)
3 September (Grade 4 learners)
4 September (Grade 5 learners)

Venue: Black Mountain Resort, Thaba Nchu

Time: The Programme commences at 9:00 on 1,3 and 4 September; 8:30 on 2 September 2015
