Free State Provincial Government commemorates World TB Day, 13 Apr

The Free State Provincial Government under the auspices of the Provincial Council on AIDS is commemorating the Provincial Chapter of the World TB Day (WAD) on Thursday, 13 April 2023, Vredefort, Mokwallo, Ngwathe Local Municipality in Fezile Dabi District.

The World Tuberculosis (TB) Day is commemorated annually on the 24th of March across the globe in recognition of the date, in 1882, when Dr Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacillus that causes tuberculosis.

The national theme for the commemoration of World TB Day 2023 is “Yes! You and I Can End TB”. The theme aims to encourage individual action to contribute to the national effort against TB. It also emphasizes the importance of being accountable as an individual and as part of a collective.
You and I” is a statement of intent designed to encourage individuals to take charge of their health in line with “Cheka Impilo” objectives, as well as the country’s endeavour towards finding the missing TB clients.

For the past few years, the focus has been on leaders calling for increased investment, prioritization and stewardship in response to TB. The proposal is to declare 2023 as “The Year of the TB Client” to shift the focus from leaders to individuals, especially people infected with TB.

The World Health Organization’s Global TB Report 2022 reported about 6.4 million TB notifications globally in 2021, an increase from 5.8 million reported in 2020. This increase in TB notifications followed a drop in 2020 due the impact of COVID 19.
