Department to raise awareness on human trafficking
As part of the February Safety Month calendar, the Department of Police, Roads and Transport (DPRT) in the Free State on Friday, 28 February 2014 will hold a campaign to create awareness on Human Trafficking in Mashaeng, Fouriesburg.
The province’s is uniquely situated in the heart of South Africa and five major national roads (N1, N3, N5, N6 and N8) crisscross it. In addition it also has an international border with the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. These factors contribute to increased transit activities and the positive and negative aspects thereof.
Human trafficking is one of the negative spin-offs of increased transit activities. Globally human trafficking is considered the third largest source of profit for organised crime. Only the illegal trade in small weapons and drug smuggling is deemed more lucrative.
It is estimated that annually up to one million people are trafficked across borders and many more are traded within in their own country of origin. Across Southern Africa today men, women and children are being deceived by unscrupulous people smugglers and introduced into a world of struggle and destitution under the pretence that will be employed. As these victims are usually desperate to earn a livelihood, they jump at the opportunity only to find out too late that they are conned into a life of exploitation and hardship.
