Free State Legislature hosts 2015 Youth Parliament, 11 Jun

The Speaker of the Free State Legislature called for the 2015 Youth Parliament to convene on the 11 June 2015 and will take a form of the normal Sitting of the Legislature, as part the national and provincial programme for the celebration of the June Month.

On the advent of democracy in 1994, the new democratic government declared 16 June as National Youth Day and June as Youth Month. 2015 marks the 39th anniversary of the June 16 Soweto uprising. The uprising ended tragically with hundreds of young people brutally killed. This tragedy became a rallying point that inspired a nation and a people to rise up against the brutal system of apartheid.

While the youth of 1976 fought for freedom and the creation of a democratic state, today’s youth activism is directed towards successfully tackling the triple threat of poverty, inequality and unemployment.

Youth in the Free State from different walks of life will converge and deliberate on these and other broad issues affecting the youth of our country and province.

Responsibilities in the Legislature from the Speaker, Members to the Sergeant in Arms will be undertaken by the youth. Outside the sitting, various youth entrepreneurial initiatives will be exhibited.

Youth Parliament schedule is as follows:
Date: 11 June 2015
Time: 09h00
Venue: Fourth Raadsaal, Free State Legislature, President Brand Street.

All Media Houses are requested to attend and cover the briefing.
