The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, in partnership with the national Department of Arts and Culture will host the provincial Consultative meeting on transformation of the heritage landscape. This will be the Free State leg of the meetings that are being held countrywide by the Department of Arts and Culture. The objective of the meeting is to address the following questions that relate to heritage:
- Taking into consideration that statues and other symbols constituted the mind and soul of the society and considering that we come from a divided society what should constitute the values of an integrated society?
- Keeping in mind that our national logo is ixxe Kara ike (Unity in Diversity), how do we represent symbols of unity in public spaces whilst protecting the unity of our diverse communities?
- How do we deal with those figures, whose mere presence evokes pain in certain sections of our communities?
- How do we reconcile history and heritage? What part of our history should be seen as our inclusive heritage?
- How do we ensure heritage contributes to the development and well-being of South Africans as with other industries?
These questions will be addressed by different stakeholders within the heritage sector who are expected to attend the meeting. Also expected to attend are various political parties present in and outside the Provincial Legislature.
The meeting will be held as follows:
Date: 19 June 2015
Time: 08h30 to 16h00
