Free State hosts Older Persons Parliament, 17 Oct

Older Persons Act No 13 of 2006 seeks to deal effectively with the plight of older persons by establishing a framework aimed at the empowerment and protection of older persons and at the promotion and maintenance of their status, rights, well – being, safety and security, thus the Free State Provincial Legislature , Department of the Premier, Free State Older Persons Forum, Department of Social Development and other role players aligns themselves with the Act by holding the Older Person’s Parliament in an effort to interact and listen to their challenges and identify ways to solve them.

The purpose of the parliament is to solicit views and look at the challenges faced by the elderly as well as to show appreciation to them for their involvement in the rebuilding of our nation.  Furthermore is to establish progress and impact that government has made as well as to ensure that policy pronouncements are implemented. The theme for this year’s International Day of Older Persons which was celebrated on the 1st of October 2017 is about enabling and expanding the contributions of older people in their families, communities and societies at large. It focuses on the pathways that support full and effective participation in old age, in accordance with older persons’ basic rights, needs and preferences.

The theme underscores the link between tapping the talents and contributions of older persons and achieving the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, which is currently undergoing its third review and appraisal process. It is starkly evident that the need to tap into the often overlooked and under- appreciated contributions of older persons is not only essential to older persons’ well-being, but also imperative for sustainable development processes. The 2017 theme will explore effective means of promoting and strengthening the participation of older persons in various aspects of social, cultural, economic and civic and political life.
