Free State hosts Older Persons’ Parliament, 23 Sept

Older Persons across the Free State Province will on 23 September 2015, attend the annual Older Persons’ Parliament at the Legislature Chamber in Bloemfontein at 10h00.

The sitting will serve as an opportunity for senior citizens to engage with the Provincial Legislature on critical issues affecting their lives and also during the monitoring and oversight of services to older persons; allowing them to participate in decision-making on issues affecting them; making older persons aware of their rights, including the right not to be abused; sensitising older persons on the impact of legislation in their lives; and acknowledging the contribution of older persons in the families and the community as a valuable resource in the community.

The Legislature is working closely with the Department of Social Development to make this possible including relevant stakeholders that deal directly with the welfare of senior citizens ranging from Non-governmental Organisations (NGO's), Community- Based Organisations (CBO'S), Free State Older Persons Forum, Government Departments and Agencies.

Parliament is there to ensure that all the laws that it passes are implemented and observed hence all issues raised by Older Persons on the day will be handled by relevant portfolio committees for them to hold departments and all relevant structures accountable, and report back to older persons about responses from departments.
