This Great Giant, Dr. Bethuel Setai was born on the 30 April 1939 and we learned of his sudden departure on earth on the 28 April 2015, just a mere 2 days from celebrating his 76th birthday. He was one of the dependable Disciples of Nelson Mandela as the ANC and its guerilla wing Umkhonto we Sizwe was consolidating its presence in many parts of our country during the dark days of apartheid.
It is the chosen dependable few that were anointed to serve on such a distinguished platform. At the dawn of the new era as a result of the historic 1994 democratic breakthrough, Dr. Setai was appointed as the first Director General of the Free State Democratic Administration in 1994 until 1998. An economist by academic practice, an astute administrator, a passionate farmer, a mentor and a philanthropist touched many lives in his quest to restore the long lost dignity of the African people.
“As the Free State Provincial Government we feel deprived by death as we had to suddenly part with one of our jewels with whom we stood to do so much to uplift the living standards of our people. The selfless contribution of this Son of the soil, a compatriot, veteran of the struggle, an educator and a disciple of Nelson Mandela has left an indelible mark in our hearts. He will be sorely missed. May his Family, Friends, Colleagues, and Comrades be consoled by the monumental legacy that he leaves behind” said Premier Magashule.
