Free State Government takes a boy child to work

Free State Provincial Government will host about 100 boys who are orphans or without fathers from Friday, 5 July to Sunday 7 July as part of the ‘Take a boy child to work’ initiative.

The purpose of this initiative is to expose the boy child to different careers opportunities in government, and also provide them with an opportunity to interact with responsible men and inspire them to believe in themselves. This initiative forms part of the provincial government celebration of youth month.

These boys will spend quality time with the Premier, MECs, HODs, Mayors, Speakers, Municipal Managers and other senior officials for three days. On the first day, Friday 5 July they will accompany their hosts to the workplace and the following two days at their homes.

“This will give these boys an opportunity to experience responsible fatherhood, serve as an inspiration and inculcate a positive attitude” says Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe. The government observed that boys without positive role models are more likely to engage in harmful activities such as gangsterism, drug and alcohol abuse and other misdemeanours.

Free State Provincial Government believes that this programme will instill hope and motivate learners to achieve their dreams despite their challenging backgrounds. One of the learners set to benefit from this programme, Xolisa Madi from Lereko High School in Bloemfontein.

“I had never anyone to call daddy, this means a lot to me” he says.
