Free State Government celebrates International Mandela Day, 18 Jul

The Free State Provincial Executive Council will on the 18th July 2015, spread across the province to implement various programmes earmarked as part of the 67 minutes for International Nelson Mandela Day. The main event will take place in Botshabelo, East of Bloemfontein on that day.

The community service activities on the day will include:

  • Building of 67 houses for the identified needy households in the area
  • Distribution of sanitary towels and toilet papers in all schools
  • Implementation of the hygiene and sanitation programme
  • Planting of vegetable gardens in schools
  • Renovation and upgrading of Female Ward in Botshabelo Hospital.
  • Distribution of soccer kits

Free State Provincial Government has committed itself to doing things differently in drastically effecting changes to the lives of the people of Botshabelo. The government will focus on schools as centres of community mobilisation for good hygiene practises as part of deepening behavioural change of the entire society.

“It is our moment of pride that these life changing practises are implemented to coincide with the International Nelson Mandela Day Month Campaign”, said Premier

During this month long campaign, we hope to inspire everyone in resonance with the personality of the iconic Nelson Mandela.

These are activities that are taking place in the province:

  • Friday the 17- Executive council will join hands with the University of the Free State by donating money and canned foods to support the “No Student Hungry Bursary Programme”. This Programme invests in potential and supports academic achievers who come from challenging backgrounds. The NSH food bursary is awarded to students on the basis of financial need, academic excellence, and the commitment to serve the community. The programme has assisted more than 500 students since 2011.
  • The 25 July- The province will go back to Botshabelo to offer health services to the community. Estimated 67 doctors from across the country will offer all health related services.
  • The 27 July- , Free State will send 53 students to study IT and Pharmacy to India.
