Free State Environmental Affairs hosts special game auction, 28 May

Forty special breed animals will be sold to highest bidders during the first ever special game auction to be hosted by Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs on the 28 May 2015 at Willow Lake Hotel at 11h00.

These 30 buffalos and 10 sables to be auctioned are generically superior and carefully selected to give game farmers competitive edge against their competitors.

The aim of the auction is to optimise revenue generation for the province so that poverty can be minimised, whilst properly managing game population so as to comply with each Reserve`s correct carrying capacity.

This is the second game auction to take place this financial year and it is expected to attract 100 special buyers, particularly breeders and professional hunters. During the tabling of the 2015/16 budget vote, it was indicated that in order to improve revenue collection the department will continue to contribute handsomely to the provincial fiscus through the proceeds of excess game.

The first game auction this year managed to raise R15.5 million. It is estimated that this elite auction will raise R7 million which if achieved, would be for the first time ever that this department raises more than R20 million in a financial year from game sale.

Transforming the industry is still government priority and to prove that, during the previous financial year, game to the value of R3 million was donated or loaned to 9 black emerging game farmers.

The game auction also creates equitable trading opportunities to the diverse stakeholders to interact and do business through this chain of industry opportunities.
