Free State Economic Development celebrates 2014 World Consumer Rights Day, 25 Mar

The World Consumer Rights Day Celebration ffreor 2014 will rock Phuthaditjhaba stadium, where more than 1 000 community members will be educated about their rights as consumers. The theme for this year`s celebration is “Fix Our Phone Rights!”.

This year’s celebration will tackle issues that most affect consumers of mobile services and will also highlight the consumer issues that are undermining and frustrating their phone rights.

Other issues that are of concern to consumers and will be discussed are:

  • Consumers must know their rights, understand and enforce them.
  • Consumers must also know their responsibilities and effectively practice them.

This activity gives expression to the MEC’s statement during the tabling of the budget speech in March 2013 where MEC Mosebenzi Zwane indicated that the department`s main aim with consumer education is to enlighten communities about consumer rights as we realize that our people fall prey to unfair business practices.

As part of the activities for the day, 18 business enterprises in the area will receive productive equipment and assets aimed at boosting and enhancing their business sustainability as part of the department’s Micro Enterprise Support Programme.

There will also be exhibitions by DETEA, Consumer Industry Organisations and entertainment by local performing artists. For the past 3 quarters of the 2013/14 fiscal year, the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs resolved 325 cases amounting to more than 3 million which is money back into the pockets of consumers.
