The National Freedom Day Celebrations will be held on 27 April 2018 in the Free State Province. The 2018 National Freedom Day marks 24 years of freedom from apartheid-colonial oppression and two (2) decades of constitutional democracy.
South Africa also celebrates the centenary of Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu, the giants who epitomized our struggle for liberation. It is an opportunity not only to celebrate 20 years of the Constitution, freedom and democracy, but to also reflect on how South Africa`s democracy and freedom was achieved, the progress made in the past 24 years and how South Africans should work together to achieve socio-economic freedom.
The theme for the 2018 Freedom Month celebration is “The Year of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela: United for a Radical Socio-economic Transformation”. President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the keynote address. The commemoration of the National Freedom Day Celebrations will be preceded by build-up activities that are as follows:
1. Social Cohesion Dialogue: This programme will take place on 26 April 2018 at the University of the Free State (Equitas Auditorium, Law Faculty) at 18h00. There will be a panel discussion which will consist of various speakers, namely, Minister Nathi Mthethwa, MEC Mathabo Leeto, Commissioner Nomasonto Mazibuko, Dr. Chitja Twala and Prof. Vuyiswa Tanga. The dress code for this event is formal/traditional clothing.
2. Freedom Day 5KM Big Walk: This programme will place on 27 April 2018 at 06:00. The starting and ending point will be at the Free State Athletics Stadium. Registration is free and all participants will receive Wrist Bands and T-shirts at the registration.
The theme for this programme is “Walk to Freedom”.

Cooler boxes will not be allowed inside the venue and minors will not be allowed to enter the venue without the supervision of an adult.

This has created a new social climate and a sense of freedom and security.” said MEC Mathabo Leeto.
