The Minister of Finance, Mr Pravin Gordhan will on Friday, 2 May 2014 at 10h00, deliver the keynote address at a function to officially open the first-of-its-kind in South Africa, Maritime Port of Entry Control Centre (MPECC) at Cowrie Place, within the Cape Town Harbour.
The significance of the Centre at Cowrie Place is that for the first time, all the Department and agencies involved in the management of border control will operate under one roof.
This is an important step in the direction of enhancing the integrated approach to border management and tackling problems of border security and control in the maritime Port of Entry environment and within the Cape Town Harbour in particular.
The mission is to have a world-class service delivery; intelligence-driven and coordinated joint command structure, which boosts interaction and manage inter-agency activities and operations within the Cape Town Maritime Port of Entry.
The flagship feature of the Cowrie Place is the establishment of a Coordination Monitoring Centre, where the data and information will be fed, assimilated and made available to all government department and agencies involved in the maritime border management.
Other departments and agencies involved are;
- Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (Agriculture and Marine
- Department of Health (Port Health)
- Department of Home Affairs (Immigration and Inspectorate)
- South African Police (Border Police and Crime Intelligence)
- South African Revenue Service (Customs, Customs Water Wing, Research and Analysis and Border Control Operating Coordination Centre (BCOCC)
- State Security Agency
All Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Ministers are expected to attend the event.

Individual journalists must personally present themselves for accreditation. Identification such as an ID book/passport and a press card will be required.
