EPWP Comunity Safety Project

In its quest to provide work opportunities to the unemployed youth and improve socio-economic conditions of communities, the National Department of Public Works (NDPW) cordially invites you to the handover of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Social Sector Youth Community Safety and Security project to the George Local Municipality, Western Cape.

Details of the event are as follows:
Date: 18 July 2014, Friday

Part 1 of the programme will start from 10h00 to 14h00 at Sonneblomland Creche in Protea park; George

Part 2 will start from 17h30 to 20h30 at George Local Municipal Civic Centre

George Youth Community Safety and Security project was introduced in January 2013 as a pilot project of the EPWP Social Sector to create work opportunities and expand the sector’s foot print at local level. The project has employed 37 young people as firefighters, traffic wardens and school patrols. The project is designed to address youth unemployment while rendering security and safety services to school children, officials and communities in public buildings, in town and surrounding areas of George. The project espouses the following objectives:

  • Creation of work opportunities for young people from 18 – 35 years in George local municipality and surrounding areas under the auspices of the EPWP Social Sector.
  • Provision of monthly stipends for the youth in line with the EPWP Ministerial Determination.
  • Training of the youth in the project for efficient service delivery and personal development. All the youth on the project have been trained on Traffic Warden NQF Level 4 (Law Enforcement) by the Nelson Mandela University.
  • Collaboration among relevant stakeholders to fully achieve the project objective to empower the youth to develop and access employment in future for better lives. Three Participants of the project have recently been appointed by George municipality as Traffic Wardens while one participant has been appointed by the South African Police Service in Cape Town.

The Deputy Minister will also visit Sonnebloom Early Childhood Development Centre in Protea park; and dedicate the 67 minutes on activities such as painting, gardening and cleaning of the Centre as a symbol of assisting those in need and making a difference in their lives.
