Employment and Labour hosts occupational health and safety Indaba, 24 to 26 Jul

It’s all systems go for the occupational health and safety (OHS) Indaba - Department of Employment and Labour 

The Department of Employment and Labour will this week host the biggest conference which places occupational health and safety (OHS) in workplaces under the spotlight.

The conference seeks to come with latest continuing professional development (CPD) points for several sectors to foster compliance with healthcare standards. The Department is also hosting the conference to advocate the work performed by its Inspection and Enforcement Services to ensure safe working places, and promote the worker’s health in the advancement of Agenda 2030, that seeks to advance sustainable development goals. 

Employment and Labour Minister, Thulas Nxesi is expected to deliver a keynote address on the second day of the conference. The Minister will share the stage with Department of Employment and Labour Director-General, Thobile Lamati.

It will be held from 24-26 July 2019 at the Emperors Palace in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng Province. The theme of the conference is: “Strategic co-operation to promote decent work and achieve ‘Vision Zero’ in occupational injuries and diseases”.

Department of Employment and Labour Inspector General Aggy Moiloa will tomorrow (24 July) deliver the opening address. She will share the stage with the International Labour Organization (ILO) Senior Specialist, Employers’ Activities Maria Machailo-Ellis.

Some of the speakers at the three-day conference will include: Department of Employment and Labour Chief Inspector Tibor Szana; representatives from organised business and organised labour; Compensation Fund Commissioner Vuyo Mafata; and Department of Employment and Labour Deputy Director-General for Labour Policy and Industrial Relations Virgil Seafield.

During the conference there will also be breakaway sessions to reflect on a number of subjects such as: silicosis in the construction sector; gender aspects in OHS; impact of HIV/AIDS & TB in the world of work; management of noise induced hearing loss in the iron and steel sector; illegal use of explosives; OHS in the informal sector; 4th industrial revolution and work; findings of incident investigation: structural collapse; addressing occupations diseases in South Africa; occupational health care for health workers; protection of workers against noise and vibration; and impact of aging workers on OHS 

The OHS conference will coincide on the second day with the hosting of a gala dinner to confer awards to Departmental inspectors. There will also be an exhibition of industry players to demonstrate latest trends in the fields of occupational health and safety.

More than 1000 delegates are expected to attend the conference.
