Employment and Labour hosts Iron and Steel Indaba, 24 Oct

The Department of Employment and Labour Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Directorate is set to host an Iron and Steel Indaba in Durban on Thursday 24 October 2019.

The Indaba will be used as a platform to reflect on the progress and impact made since the department signed the sector accord on Occupational Health and Safety in 2013.

The Indaba will unpack issues relating to the latest developments with regards to regulations and programmes for the automotive and manufacturing sectors, state of safety in the iron and steel sector and, deliberate on global strategies for the reduction of incidents in the sector.

Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Director Jacob Malatse says, the statistics collected by the department through Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), Compensation Fund (CF) and inspections conducted, reveal that the iron and steel sector records the high numbers in fatalities, injuries and diseases.

The Indaba will bring together OHS inspectors as well as industry specialists to develop strategies and pave a way forward in ensuring that incidents in the sectors are reduced and prevented.

The media is invited.
