The Department of Employment and Labour through Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) in the Western Cape will conduct a week-long (26-30 June 2023) blitz inspections of employers operating in the hospitality industry in the Southern Cape to check the level of compliance with labour legislation.
The inspections will gauge the employers’ compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act (NMW), Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA), Compensation for Occupational Injuries & Diseases Act (COIDA) as well as the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA).
The NMW was set at R25,42 per hour with effect 1 March 2023. It is the floor level below which no employee should be paid.
The inspection is targeting employers operating in the hospitality industry in the Garden Route Eden District Municipality and Knysna and Bitou Local Municipalities.
While the inspections are targeted at employers in the hospitality industry, they are also intended to increase the Department's visibility and monitoring of compliance with labour laws in the area. The aim of the inspections is also to provide advice, educate and give technical information and support to both workers and employers about the services of the Department.
Furthermore, the inspections are aimed at strengthening working relations with relevant stakeholders in the workplace which aid in promoting sound labour relations and increasing level of compliance.
