Electoral Commission holds Municipal ward by-elections, 11 Nov

Municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West and Western Cape on Wednesday, 11 November 2015.

The by-elections are being contested by 25 candidates representing 8 political parties. Two wards are uncontested.

One by-election is scheduled to take place in the Eastern Cape of which is uncontested:

  • Ward 8 in the Engcobo [Engcobo] Municipality – EC137 is uncontested. Nomadama Nobuntu Mgidi of the African National Congress is the only candidate. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in 2011 municipal elections was 57.82%

Two by-elections will take place in the Free State:

  • Ward 33 in the Maluti a Phofung [Qwa-qwa] Municipality – FS194 will be contested by Melita Mlangeni-Ramathesele of the African National Congress and Ntaoleng Juliah Motaung of the African People’s Convention. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 50.91%.
  • Ward 13 in the Ngwathe [Parys] Municipality – FS203 will be contested by Gideon Phillip Mandelstam of the African National Congress and Salomon Hercules Francois De Jager of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 02 April 2014 by-election was 45.15%.

Four by-elections will take place in Gauteng:

  • Ward 73 in the City of Johannesburg [Johannesburg] Municipality – JHB will be contested by Philani Blessing Mbatha of the African National Congress; Sidney Anolik of the Congress of the People and Mia Snyman of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 57.13%.
  • Ward 16 in the Tshwane Metro [Pretoria] Municipality – TSH will be contested by Mosadisadi Christina Kekana of the African National Congress and Mokgohlwe Deborah Ramatsetse of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 51.10%.

One by-election is scheduled for the Mpumalanga:

  • Ward 20 in the Nkomazi [Nkomazi] Municipality – MP324 will be contested by Njabulo Sydney Minisi of the African National Congress and Thulani Shongwe of the Congress of the People.  The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 57.32%.

Two by-elections will take place in the North West of which one is uncontested:

  • Ward 17 in the Rustenburg [Rustenburg] Municipality – NW373 will be contested by Martha Mlambo of the African National Congress; Martin Coetzee of the Democratic Alliance and De Wet Nel of Vryheidsfront Plus. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a resignation of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this war in the 2011 municipal elections was 52.79%.
  • Ward 13 in the Matlosana [Klerksdorp] Municipality – NW403 is uncontested. Thembeka Obittah Vilakazi of the African National Congress is the only candidate. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillor’s membership from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 54.86%.

Three by-elections will take place in the Western Cape:

  • Ward 14 in the Drakenstein [Paarl]  Municipality – WC023 will be contested by Sangolomzi Ganandana of the African National Congress; Jo-Ann De Wet of the Democratic Alliance and Anwar Romes of the Die Volk Stem Van Suider Afrika. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a resignation of the death of the councillor. The voter turnout for this war in the 2011 municipal elections was 64.93%.
  • Ward 1 in the Cape Agulhas [Bredasdorp] Municipality – WC033 will be contested by Francois Scheoman of the African National Congress and Evelyn Lorraine Sauls of the Democratic Alliance.  The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 71.10%.
  • Ward 2 in the Oudtshoorn [Oudtshoorn] Municipality – WC045 will be contested by Katrien Booysen of the African National Congress; George Jacobus Kersop of the Democratic Alliance; Gevan Hilton Juthe of the South African Religious Civic Organisation and Barend Petrus De Wet of the Ward Democratic Forum. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a resignation of the resignation of the councillor.
  • The voter turnout for this war in the 2011 municipal elections was 68.90%
