Parliament’s National Assembly (NA) will be electing chairpersons of the House’s over 30 committees this week starting tomorrow Tuesday, 24 June till Wednesday, 25 June 2014.
Committees are the engine rooms of Parliament as they ensure that the business of the two Houses of the institution (the NA and the National Council of Provinces) is undertaken. They are composed of smaller groups of Members of Parliament which enables an increase in the amount of work that can be done and higher levels of participation by MPs.
Committees are, in general, proportionally representative of the parties in Parliament and their meetings are open to the public but may be closed if there is a good reason.
The newly appointed chairpersons will lead their respective committees for the term of the fifth Parliament.
