As part of ensuring the smooth start of Scholar Transport services this year, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport officials will be joined by the Provincial Portfolio Committee for Education in a bid to monitor the transportation of pupils to schools.
This exercise will take place starting from 15 January until the 24 January 2013. Eight groups comprising of departmental officials, MPLs and researchers will visit different schools in Alfred Nzo, Amathole, Chris Hani, Mthatha, Cadadu, Port Elizabeth, Aliwal North, and Bufallo City.
Provincial traffic officers will also conduct inspections in all scholar transport routes to check overload, roadworthiness of vehicles and documentation of the driver’s e.g. operating licence as well as a professional driving permit.
A number of interventions have been implemented since the migration of Scholar Transport programme from Education to Transport Department in July 2011. The intension was to improve the services and those improvements include among others:
- The recent unveiling of scholar transport decal for inspected scholar transport vehicles, and for their easy identification.
- Regular roadblocks and inspections by traffic officers.
- The development of a monitoring plan which is currently being implemented
