Members from the Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders (ECHTL) will descend to two District Municipalities to spread the message about safe initiation this week. The awareness campaign is part and parcel of the implementation of the Initiation Monitoring Intervention Strategy (IMIS) for the safe passage of boys to manhood in preparation for the summer initiation season and beyond.
The programme starts from 10 to 17 November 2015 the OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo and Chris Hani District Municipalities. These are areas with prevalence of abuse, mushrooming of illegal schools which result in loss of young lives throughout the initiation seasons.
“We will have information sharing sessions as well as door to door campaigns to empower communities and key stakeholders about the need to work together to achieve zero deaths in the summer season. We want to work together we all relevant stakeholders to share resources for the safe passage of our boys to manhood. This is a community based pre-initiation awareness campaign,” said the Chairperson of the ECHTL, Nkosi Ngangomhlaba Matanzima.
The House in conjunction with multi-stakeholders are embarking on a safe initiation outreach campaign to educate out of school youth, in school initiates to be on the importance of the ritual as well as what is expected of them before attending initiation. Members of the community at large will be engaged on their roles and responsibilities to support the safe passage of boys to manhood. End.
