Eastern Cape Legislature embarks on schools oversight visits across the province, 15 to 24 Jan

Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature Bhisho, Tuesday – Members of the Legislature will be embarking on an intensive schools oversight visits across the province starting tomorrow, the 15th of January to 24 January 2020. This schools oversight visits programme aims to assess the state of schools readiness and factors that influenced grade 12 results. It also wants to ensure that teaching and learning commerce on the first day of schooling amongst other things.

The first leg of the Legislature schools oversight visits will focus on stakeholder engagements across all Districts and two Metros. At these stakeholder engagement sessions the Education Department will present the state of readiness report focusing on these key areas:

1.       Delivery of Teacher and Learner support material to schools
2.       Personnel
3.       School Nutrition Programme
4.       Scholar Transport and
5.       School Infrastructure Development Programme.

“The main objective of the 2020 schools oversight visits is not to criticize and condemn, but it aims to encourage and uplift schools to work smart and better with the limited resources at their disposal.  Where there are challenges we want to know what corrective measures will be taken by the department working with schools to address such challenges,” said Education Portfolio Committee Chairperson, MPL Mpumelelo Saziwa.

Members of the media are invited to join the Legislature as it embarks in schools oversight visits for the next two weeks. The list of schools that will be visited will be made available at the stakeholder engagement sessions at the DoE district offices.
