Eastern Cape Human Settlements launches housing development project, 29 Sept

The Department of Human Settlements in collaboration with the Department of Defence and Military Veterans will launch a multi million rand housing development project built for military veterans in Chris Hani District. 

The housing development project implemented by the Provincial Department of Human Settlements has a total of 200 houses and allocated budget of almost R43 971 879 million is currently under construction. Military veterans from different associations will benefit from this project.

Both National Department of Human Settlements and Defence and Military veterans have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. According to the Memorandum of Understanding, the Department of Military Veterans has agreed to provide top funding that will cover the additional features to all the homes we will provide for military veterans.

The project is part of 5 854 houses to be built for military veterans across this country by the end of Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF). In the Eastern Cape, 3 projects will be implemented this financial year in OR Tambo, nelson Mandela Metro and Chris Hani District with a total of 104 houses to be built for military veterans this financial year.

MEC of Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August, together with the Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Zoe Kota and Deputy Minister of Military Veterans, Kebby Maphatsoe, will hand over 10 new homes to elderly military veterans.

The houses for qualifying military veterans have unique features that include 2 bedrooms, kitchen with a stove, a car port, bathroom, plastering, ceiling installation, electricity, and fencing. One of the qualifying criteria is for the military veteran to belong to a registered association within the database of the department of Military Veterans. The Military Veterans Housing Programme is aimed at assisting and supporting military veterans and their dependents.
