Eastern Cape Human Settlements hosts Govan Mbeki Awards, 30 Apr

Department host provincial Govan Mbeki Awards to recognise best performing contractors, projects and municipalities in human settlements delivery

The Eastern Cape Provincial Department of Human Settlements will recognise and award best performing contractors, housing projects and municipalities in the delivery of human settlements for 2014/15 financial year at the Provincial annual Govan Mbeki awards to be held in Mthatha this week. It will be the first Govan Mbeki awards since the passing on of Mambeki who had attended the awards.

The awards are used by the department to honour the anti-apartheid and freedom fighter Oom Gov based on the principles of the Home of the Legends campaign adopted by the Eastern Cape Provincial Government which recognises the immense role played by the likes of the late Oom Gov.

The awards were named after the late Govan Mbeki in 2006 based on the role he played and vision he had on the preservation of human dignity and provision of human settlements for all.

The purpose of the award is to showcase work done by the department with special emphasis to its programmes, promotes best practise in the delivery of the core mandate including outcome 8 deliverables (Accelerating Housing Opportunities, Access to basic services, Improve Property Market, Efficient Utilisation of State Land).
The purpose of the Govan Mbeki awards is to promote and inculcate a culture of excellence within the Human Settlement sector in the delivery of quality human Settlements and dignity to South Africans. The awards encourage all stakeholders in the sector to respond systematically and foster the entrenchment of spatial patterns across all geographic scales that exercabate social inequality and economic efficiency.

Last year, Second Creek won the best Informal Settlements Upgrading Programme and Walmer Link won the best social housing unit at the national Govan Mbeki awards and Kwazilele Mcetywa won the best student awarded bursary in the country.
