The East London Education Leadership Institute will be abuzz from Wednesday the 2nd - 4th of December 2015 from 10h00 as the Eastern Cape Education department has assembled critical departments in a bid to address social ills affecting the schools.
This follows an internal investigation report which revealed a number of significant social drivers that have a negative impact on schooling, that include substance abuse, early sexual debut, high learner pregnancy, age-disparate relationships and violence in schools.
Additionally, this partnership seeks to address high rate of pregnancy amongst the learners, high drop-out rate of the girl child, increase in forced marriages, high HIV infection rate, the number of schools with a high rate of Drug and Alcohol Use.
Other issues that will be addressed by this programme include late detection of health challenges that hinders the department from achieving its objectives with regard to learner enrolment, retention, performance and progression.
The department believes this seminar will not only shed more light on social ills affecting schools but help to strengthen approach and develop perspective on how to deal with the social ills affecting schooling and communities, especially retention of young girls from age 12 to 19 years in schools.
