Eastern Cape Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism holds Idutywa Clean-Up Campaign, 27 Jan

Clean-up campaign and Chola Konke Project launch in Mbashe Local Municipality

The Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) cordially invites you to the Idutywa Clean-Up Campaign and launch of the Chola Konke Project in Idutywa by on Monday, 27 January 2014.

The DEDEAT is funding the project to the tune of R1.9 million as part of the Local and Regional Economic Development (LRED) Fund for the construction of a waste recycling facility that forms part of the province’s drive to meet its Constitutional obligation of ensuring a clean, safe and healthy environment.

This initiative also forms part of the Greenest Municipality Competition which is a flagship programme that seeks to encourage municipalities to adopt sound waste management activities as a contribution to the mitigation of climate change.

Municipalities are key strategic partners in meeting this challenge and have a critical role to play because of their proximity to communities and the fact that they are at the coal face of delivery.

The department launched the Greenest Municipality Competition because it wants municipalities to become involved actively in driving the growth of the Green Economy which has the potential to create a significant number of employment opportunities.

Becoming involved means introducing initiatives such as renewable energy, greening programmes and intervention that mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse emissions. The overall objective is to encourage sustainable development while producing job opportunities.

The initiative in Idutywa is one of many that follows the introduction of the National Environmental Management Waste Act that brought about a significant shift in the approach to waste management. As a result the department is encouraging municipalities to adopt the principles of waste minimisation, reuse, recycling and energy recovery as the preferred options rather than disposal to landfill sites.

The initiatives is implement in partnership with Mbashe Local Municipality at Amathole District.
