The Department of Social Development, under the leadership of the Deputy Minister, Hon. Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, has embarked on a project to address the dire needs of a 20 year old man in Emndeni, Siyabonga Khumalo from Soweto, a wheelchair user, to make their home accessible and friendly for him.
The barriers that Siyabonga experienced ranged from lack of a proper wheelchair, indoor accessibility and inaccessible surrounding environment for him to use his wheelchair. The Deputy Minister managed to secure a wheelchair for Siyabonga in 2013 and made further commitments of ensuring that the yard and house is made accessible to enable Siyabonga to move around unassisted. This will also enable him to spend time with friends outside the house and have a normal life.
GVK Siyazama Construction has come on board and has agreed to make the necessary alterations to the property. Elliott Mobility, through their generosity, will provide both the transportation and storage of the furniture for the duration of the renovations.
The handover is scheduled as follows:
Date: Friday, 8 August 2014
Time: 08h30
Venue: 2436 Sondela Street, Emndeni - Soweto
As the department, we are committed to the agenda of social transformation that is embodied in the principle of social justice and the Bill of Rights contained in our Constitution. We endeavour to create a better life for the poor, vulnerable and excluded people in our society.
