The Deputy Minister for Correctional Services, Thabang Makwetla and the Deputy Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Andries Nel will hand over an agricultural land to the youth of Umjindi Local Municipality. The beneficiaries for this initiative are the youth of Barberton who are participants of the Community Work Programme (CWP). The land which is in Ward 3 in Barberton Correctional Farm, stretches 2.5 hectares and will be handed to Umjindi Local Municipality.
The partnership in this initiative has the ability to enable local people to gain skills through the Community Work Programme (CWP), which is administered by the Department of Cooperative Governance. The programme is managed by Seriti Institute who are the Implementing Agents of CWP. In this instance, Seriti Institute will continue to manage the initiative and land will be cultivated by identified youth in the area and the produce thereof will be sold to the general public as a means to generate income for those identified youth.
The Community Work Programme provides an employment safety net, which addresses high unemployment rate by supplementing the existing livelihood strategies through the provision of a basic level of income security through work.
The Deputy Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Andries Nel will grace the occasion as part of emphasising the partnership which is intended to contribute to the overall objective of alleviating poverty and unemployment among the youth.
