Deputy Ministers Mabudafhasi and Nel to launch the Tshikali Adopt a River Project in Matsila Village, Limpopo

The Deputy Ministers of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Andries Nel, will on Thursday 10 April 2014, officially launch the Tshikali Adopt a River project in Matsila village, Limpopo.

Adopt a River project is part of the Department of Water Affairs’ River Health Programme (RHP) that enables active participation of communities to ensure sustainability of the water resources. The municipalities, sector partners, tertiary institutions, schools, private sector, agricultural communities, industries, community leaders and women in the vicinity of targeted rivers are the key role players of the Adopt a River programme.

A total of 150 community members (women only) have volunteered to take care of Tshikali River, these volunteers are from the communities residing along the river which are Basani, Matsila, De Hoop, Nkuzana, Njakanjaka and Mashau.

Whilst Deputy Minister Nel will be addressing the role of traditional leaders on environment and water conservation, Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi will give a keynote address on the launch of the project.

The event will be preceded by the clean-up of the Tshikali River and site visit to Matsila Community Boreholes and water reservoir project. There will also be planting of indigenous trees at the Tshikali River, Pfamoni and the guest house.
