Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs to launch Working for the Coast project during the International Coastal Clean-Up day

Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi will launch a R273 million Working for the Coast Programme in Louwville community, Saldanha Bay, on Friday 27 September 2013. The launch of this project will be preceded by a celebration of the International Coastal Clean-up Day.

The International Coastal Clean-up Day is an annual global event celebrated in September. This day is dedicated to the improvement of beaches, coastal regions and surrounding areas throughout the world.

The Working for the Coast Programme is an initiative of the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) which aims to create job opportunities and skills development, particularly in the rural communities. Primary beneficiaries of this programme are primarily women and the youth.

The department aims to create access to pristine beaches and a well conserved coastline through this programme. Many other benefits of this project will not only contribute to the country being a tourism destination of choice across the world, but will also bring about the much needed revenue to the coastal towns and communities whilst creating job opportunities in the tourism sector.
