The Deputy Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Ms Thembi Nkadimeng will address the South African Local Government Association’s (SALGA) Eastern Cape and Limpopo Conferences.
The provincial conferences, convened and held 90 days after every local government elections, are this year held under the theme: ‘Enhancing the quality of local democracy and professionalising local government’. The conferences will be attended by delegates from all municipalities including Executive Mayors, Speakers, Chief Whips, Municipal Managers and Chief Finance Officers.
In line with SALGA’s constitution, the conferences will, amongst others:
1. Elect the members of the Provincial Executive Committee
2. Nominate two Members to the National Executive Committee
3. Nominate three representatives for the National Council of Provinces
4. Nominate three representatives for the Provincial Legislature
5. Approve the provincial programme of action and budget for the ensuing five years
Accordingly, the 2022 provincial conferences are expected to emerge with both new leadership and a five-year strategic programme in pursuit of transforming local government.
