The Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Hon. Thabang Makwetla, will officially open a state-of-the-art bakery at St Albans Correctional facility in Port Elizabeth on 31 August 2018.
St Albans becomes the ninth facility to open a bakery and reaffirms the Department of Correctional Services’ quest of establishing self-sufficiency within its centres. This new bakery will be supplying bread to 5 941 inmates spread across seven centres under the jurisdiction of St. Albans Management Area.
The savings on bread baked with own resources as opposed to external procurement is an estimated net saving of R1 907 125.81 per annum. This projection is based on a baking capacity of 2 319 loaves per day. The 12 inmates working at the bakery were offered specialised training internally and plans are afoot to increase this number. The process of accrediting the bakery is also in the pipeline in order to ensure that offenders working at the bakery would receive accredited training and a certificate as evidence of the skills acquired. It is our duty as Correctional Services to rehabilitate and equip inmates with necessary skills to become employable and productive citizens.
