Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla hands over school furniture to Port Elizabeth school, 15 May

As part of initiatives to discourage more youth from doing crime and being incarcerated, the Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Mr Thabang Makwetla will visit Port Elizabeth and Kirkwood, in the Eastern Cape, on Friday (15 May 2015).

Details of the visit are as follows:
Part 1:
The Deputy Minister will visit Garrett Primary School in Zwide Location, Port Elizabeth, to officially handover library shelves, built by offenders at the St. Albans Correctional Centre Production Workshop, following a request from the Principal of the school.

Part 2:

The Deputy Minister will address a Safer Schools Crime Awareness Campaign at Kirkwood Correctional Centre. Approximately 60 learners, from different schools, will join the Deputy Minister and will be taken on a tour of the correctional centre, where they will be addressed by convicted inmates who are serving long-term sentences for various crimes. These inmates, who are participating in rehabilitation programmes whilst in custody, will interact with the learners, educating, and sensitising, them about the consequences of committing crime.

As part of on-going crime awareness, and crime prevention, initiatives in schools throughout the country, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), in partnership with various stakeholders, are targeting school learners.
