Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla hands over agricultural land to the youth of Umjindi Local Municipality, 30 Sept

The Deputy Minister of Correctional Services Mr. Thabang Makwetla, will hand Agricultural land to Umjindi Local Municipality. The land in concern is part of Barberton Correctional Farm which is currently unutilised by the department.  

The initiative is part of government’s effort in alleviating poverty in the country, creating sustainable Youth development and transferring skills.

The land will be handed to Umjindi Local Municipality, managed by the Seriti Institute and cultivated by identified youth from Umjindi Local Municipality. The land will be used to grow vegetables, such as cabbages, tomatoes, carrots, beetroots, pumpkins and etc. The produced vegetables will be sold to local super markets, public hospitals, public school and the indigents will also benefit from this project.

On this date the department of Correctional Services and Umjindi local Municipality will also sign the Service Level Agreement (SLA) which will last for the period of three years flexible for extension.
