Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla engages Kroonstad community in Youth Imbizo, 30 Jun

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Mr Thabang Makwetla, together with the Mayor of Moqhaka Municipality Cllr. Justice Mareka, will participate during a Youth Imbizo event to be held on Tuesday 30 June 2015 at the Department of Correctional Services Kroonstad Training College, Free State Province. The Imbizo, to be attended by over 500 young people from Moqhaka Municipality, forms part of Government’s month long Youth Imbizo programme where various Ministers and Deputy Ministers are engaging youth throughout the country as part of efforts to communicate government programmes on youth development and, more importantly, get feedback from the youth.

The Community youth will be joined by no less than 50 young correctional officials from different provinces to dialogue on challenges facing young people (employed and unemployed) such as joblessness, skills development and substance abuse which have a direct impact on the rate of crime and the imprisonment of young people in South Africa.

Between April and December 2014, the number of youth inmates in South Africa’s 243 correctional centres was estimated at 30 126. Of this number, 7 994 youth offenders were held for economic crimes with 3 068 that were still awaiting trial.
