As part of strengthening faith contributions to rehabilitation and reintegration for a safer South Africa, the Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Mr Thabang Makwetla, has been invited to deliver the keynote address at the St. Bernard Mizeki Anglican Church annual Patronal Festival on Sunday, 4 October 2015.
Approximately 700 people are expected to attend the Festival. The Deputy Minister will be joined by the Johannesburg Correctional Centre Female Choir. Ms Morwesi Theledi (31), who was sentenced on 2 March 2012 to 8 years and six months imprisonment for fraud and forgery, will also address the festival.
It is well-known that the challenge of curbing crime, and reshaping the criminal justice system, is not the sole responsibility of government, but is also a test of the commitment of the religious community. Therefore, interactions between the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) and churches are significant.
In the face of violence and crime, our different faiths call us all to responsibility and action. Various faith-based organisations are reaching out to the offended (or victims of crime), inmates in correctional centres and their families, ex-offenders, and others impacted by crime, and the criminal justice system, through counseling, employment and other programmes as well as early intervention efforts directed towards families and individuals at risk. Yet, much more still needs to be done.
