Transport Deputy Minister brings Road Accident Fund services to Soweto
Transport Deputy Minister, Honourable Sindisiwe Chikunga will lead an intensive “RAF on the Road” community outreach campaign which will run concurrently in four provinces on Saturday, 15 March.
Supported by live television and radio, the campaign takes place in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Gauteng. The aim of this much-needed drive is to expand communications, improve access and accelerate the processing and payment of claims and post settlements by the Road Accident Fund, an agency of the Department of Transport.
On the day, eligible community members across the provinces, will not only have RAF services brought to their doorstep, they will also be invited to claim directly with the Fund, saving them from unnecessary contingency fees and disproving the old perception that they can only claim through a lawyer. They will also be educated about the RAF, given settlement offers, assisted with claims enquiries and provided with support to rehabilitate accident survivors.
Since March 2012, a total of 31 outreach campaigns in the nine provinces have been reached while settlement offers worth approximately R254 million have been made. This has brought much-needed relief and socio-economic balance amongst claimants and families torn apart by road crashes.
Deputy Minister Chikunga will also present scholar patrol uniforms, literary material and school shoes to learners from the surrounding areas through the RAF’s Corporate Social Investment programme which entails road safety education and awareness aimed at promoting compliance to traffic rules, changing road user behaviour and curbing the escalating rate of crashes and fatalities.
