The Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga, together with the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport in Mpumalanga, Ms Dumisile Nhlengethwa will donate a total of 425 bicycles to various schools in the Province as part of the Shova Kalula Programme. The bicycles will be donated to five (5) schools which include HS Mkolishi and Maqhawuzela Combined Schools in the Gert Sibande District, Nasindlela Secondary School and Sokapho Primary School in the Nkangala District and Ian Mackenzie Primary School in the Bohlabela District. A total of about ninety (90) bicycles will be donated to each of the schools.

Learners from these schools will benefit from the Shova Kalula bicycle programme, which is a non-motorised transport system aimed at lightening the learners’ burden of having to travel or walk more than (3) kilometres to and from school daily and do not qualify for scholar transport in terms of policy provisions.

The department introduced the Shova Kalula programme in 2005 with the objective being to provide a non-motorised form of transport for learners walking long distances to and from school, especially in rural communities.
