Deputy Minister Sello Seitlholo conducts oversight visit to JB Marks Local Municipality on water and sanitation challenges, 26 to 27 Mar

The Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr Seitlholo, will undertake a two-day oversight visit to the JB Marks Local Municipality in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, Northwest on 26-27 March 2026, to assess the status of water and sanitation services within the municipality

The visit forms part of the Department of Water and Sanitation’s ongoing efforts to strengthen service delivery, ensure regulatory compliance, and address environmental challenges associated with wastewater management.

JB Marks Municipality, which includes Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp, is currently facing several critical challenges related to ageing infrastructure, inadequate operations and maintenance, sewer spillages, and environmental pollution affecting key water resources such as the Mooi River and Skoon Spruit.

The oversight visit will focus on the operations and maintenance of key wastewater treatment works (WWTWs) and associated infrastructure, including pump stations and sewer reticulation systems. Attention will be given to compliance with the National Water Act and the Water Services Act, as well as progress made in implementing corrective action plans issued by the Department.

The Deputy Minister will also assess progress on strategic infrastructure projects funded through the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant (RBIG) and the Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG), which are aimed at improving water supply and sanitation services in the municipality. These projects include the Potchefstroom Bulk Water Supply Project and the Promosa and Poortjiesdam Bulk Sewer Line Project, among others.

The visit will provide an opportunity to engage with municipal leadership, technical teams, and stakeholders to identify solutions, strengthen accountability, and accelerate interventions required to improve service delivery and protect water resources.
