Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi opens 12th Annual National Oral History Conference in Durban, 13 Oct

Arts and Culture Deputy Minister, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi will open the 12th Annual National Oral History Conference on the 13th of October 2015 at the Playhouse Company in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

Held annually during the month of October, the conference is intended to yield information that would be added to the information already existing in the country’s archival holdings and to promote and facilitate the recording, preservation, access, popularisation and study of oral history in South Africa. Oral history includes music, oral praise, oral performance and oral tradition.

This year’s conference will be held under the theme: “Freedom Charter, Memories and (UN) Freedoms” and takes place over a period of four days, from 13 to 16 October 2015. Since its establishment eleven years ago, Oral History programme has launched the iNkosi Albert Luthuli History Competition for school learners, conducted workshops as well as organising excursions with specific focus on marginalised heritage in the provinces.

Prior to the event, the Deputy Minister will conduct a flag hoisting ceremony on Monday 12 October 2015, at Ngangezwe High School at 7h30 as part of the Department of Arts and Culture’s Flag in Every School Campaign. The campaign involves hoisting of the national flag, the correct etiquette of singing the National Anthem, the recital of the Preamble of the Constitution by the learners, distribution of the South African flags and publications on national symbols as well as the distribution of CD Tool Kit on how to sing the AU and the National Anthems

Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi will then present 50 learners with certificates of participation, acknowledging their Participation in the Oral History programme. The event will take at Msunduzi Municipality at 10h00 in Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal. Members of the media are invited.
