Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi to handover the Greenest Municipality Competition prize awards at Premier Hotel OR Tambo

The Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mme Rejoice Mabudafhasi, will hand over the 2010/11 Greenest Municipalities Competition prize awards at Premier Hotel OR Tambo on Tuesday the 20th November 2012.

The eleventh anniversary competition seeks to acknowledge and encourage municipalities who are introducing renewable energy projects in their localities to do more. It further aims to bring on-board municipalities which are not yet participating in the competition. The overarching objective is to raise awareness for municipalities to see the importance of managing waste in a manner which creates job opportunities by observing waste management principles whilst at the same time ensuring a cleaner environment.

By virtue of being the coal face of service delivery, municipalities are considered strategic partners in fighting climate change. They are ideally placed to mobilise the masses and can achieve the fastest implementation of Green Economy’s renewable energy initiatives such as wind and solar power which can contribute to the reduction of reliance on coal powered energy.

The department awards prizes according to two categories namely; the Metropolitan Municipality and Local Municipality which are awarded first, second and third prizes. The prize money has to be utilised for projects that promote waste management and promote Green Economy initiatives.
