Arts and Culture Deputy Minister, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, MP, will address the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Science Centre 5 years of excellence celebrations on Saturday, 31 January 2015, at the UJ Soweto campus.
The Deputy Minister will speak about the role of indigenous knowledge in sciences and the importance of reading and counting.
South African mathematics and science educators are often criticised for poor performance in their subject matter and as a result learners struggle to pass the subjects satisfactorily. There is no doubt that the country needs serious intervention strategies that could strengthen mentorship, support and guidance in curriculum implementation at all school levels. Up to now the Centre has been focusing on FET school level (grade 10, 11 and 12) as this is the transition stage to tertiary education. Learning from the successes of the past 5 years the Centre is now in a better position to extend its programmes to Senior and Intermediate phase at school level.
The Centre is a necessity in the community because it not only encourages learners to do well in matric, but it also prepares them for the challenges of university.
