Deputy Minister Dr Regina Mhaule to launch the NSNP/Pioneer Foods Schools Breakfast Nutrition Programme in Gauteng

The Deputy Minister of Basic Education (DBE) Dr MR Mhaule will be joined by the CEO of Pioneer Foods, Mr Tertius Carstens to launch the NSNP/Pioneer Foods School Breakfast Nutrition Programme on Wednesday, 28 August 2019 at the Winnie Mandela Primary School in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng.

The National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) is the department’s flagship programme which supports quality teaching and learning by providing more than 9 million learners in 21800 schools with cooked nutritious meals on all school days. The programme aims to enhance the learning capacity of learners through the provision of a healthy meal at schools and where it is implemented. The NSNP has shown to improve punctuality, regular school attendance, concentration and the general wellbeing of participating learners.

Pioneer Foods’ Schools Breakfast Nutrition Programme, which complements the NSNP, started in 2015 and in addition to Gauteng is now active in 35 primary schools across Limpopo, North West Province, Free State, Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. As part of its programme, Pioneer Foods provides nutritious cereals such as Weet Bix, Bokomo Corn Flakes, and White Star Instant porridge to the schools; as well as bowls, spoons, long life milk and aprons for the food handlers.

The schools chosen by Pioneer Foods to participate in this programme are in disadvantaged areas of the country.
