Deputy Minister Pinky Kekana conducts oversight monitoring visit at Deelpan Village, 26 Mar

Deputy Minister in the Presidency responsible for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Ms Pinky Kekana will, on Tuesday 26 March 2024, conduct an oversight monitoring visit at Deelpan Village under the Tswaing Local Municipality in the North West Province.

She will be supported by Deputy Minister of Public Service and Administration, Dr Chana Pilane-Majake; North West MEC for Education, Ms Viola Motsumi; Member of the Mayoral Committee at the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, Cllr Dimakatso Malwane; and Tswaing Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Norah Mahlangu.

Key stakeholders such as the Traditional Leadership, Office of the Premier in the North West, Provincial Government Departments, the United Nations and the Human Rights Commission will also participate.

The purpose of the visit is to assess the progress of the government’s integrated efforts to restore Deelpan after prolonged heavy rainfalls between December 2021 and March 2022 resulted in over 75% of the village being submerged in water. In May 2022, Deputy Minister Kekana, Deputy Ministers of Health, COGTA, and Human Settlements immediately visited Deelpan to assess the damage, establish progress with government interventions and identify areas for further support.

Subsequently, the Deelpan Flood Disasters Monitoring Task Team, chaired by the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation working with Sector Departments was established to facilitate accelerated interventions in the area. To date, significant inroads have been made to rebuild a better Deelpan in terms of human settlements, health, poverty alleviation, and socio-economic programmes, amongst others. The latest oversight monitoring will also be used to commemorate Human Rights Month and entail walkabouts to key developments in the village.
