Deputy Minister Phaahla to open the Hope and Optimism Artworks Exhibition

Arts and Culture Deputy Minister, Joe Phaahla, invites media to the opening of Hope and Optimism Art Exhibition at the Ditsong Museum on Thursday 27 June 2013, Pretoria.

Selections of 25 lithographical prints donated by Gerrit Kempeneers to South Africa arrived on 8 September 2012 and were received by the Arts and Culture Ministry. Gerrit Kempeneers is an EU Coordinator for Hope and Optimism artworks. He started the collection in the 1990’s and building it up to one hundred artworks, representing over a 100 international artists.

Hope and Optimism art exhibition has no geographical, political or cultural boundaries. Launched in May 1990, the exhibition is supported by prominent artists and major cultural institutions from all over the world. The exhibition is inspired by John Muafangejo, the first black Namibian to study a fine arts course.

Muafangejo developed his own style, his linocuts incorporating metaphoric imagery. Another typical feature in his work is the use of brief statements in a very distinctive grammar and spelling.

The exhibition has received the high patronage of UNESCO and has been exhibited in Europe and United States of America. South Africa is particularly honoured to have been chosen to receive this donation.
